This is so that each eye receives 24fps for 3d. So finally 3d will now look like a 3d "movie" rather than a 3d flip book.
Each eye already receives 24fps (for both 2D and 3D) but the 48fps will make the motion look less choppy and less blurry. The differences can be seen in both 2D and 3D but 3D should be more comfortable to watch at the higher frame rate (especially for long periods of time).

You can already do that. The current iMacs support dual display, just not the 30"

Really? I heard that you can connect and external monitor using a hack software for dual screen support . But it does not support the cinema displays.
    I hope I am wrong.:)

There are more details here - http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/060719/sfw089.html?.v=60

At the end of the page is a breakdown in the sales figures.

Desktop sales are down 14% on last quarter, and 23% on a year ago, but laptop sales are up a whopping 60% on last quarter and 61% on a year ago.

Not surprising. They haven't released a replacement for the G5 tower, and people have been waiting for a faster laptop for 3+ years since they never had the G5 laptop.

    left to right:
20" Apple Cinema Display, 1st Gen. 16gb iPod Touch, Late 2008 MacBook Pro on top of Griffin iStand controlled by an Apple wireless keyboard and Magic mouse, 1TB Seagate external HDD, 32gb Ipad wifi only, 21" Samsung display, 2cd Gen. TV, Razer Lycosa keyboard and Razer Death Adder mouse which controls a Windows XP box i built for my job(under the desk). You can barly see it but there is also a Power PC Mac Mini on top of the Windows machince which acts as a FTP server.

That's no late 2008 MacBook Pro. It can't be, because the late 2008 MacBook Pro was the first to get a unibody design. That might be the early 2008 MacBook Pro with the old classic design. Sorry to say that ;)

    Nice setup though! :)

Apple needs something between the horribly constrained MiniMac, and the preposterously huge ProMac.

A Conroe (64-bit, single-socket, dual-core) system would fit the bill....

    Aiden,or others.

What do you think about the rumours that a single socket Conroe thanks to its superior memory handling effiency (~70%?) compared to Xeons DB-Dimms lousy (~25?) might crush a dual socket Xeon in memory intesive tasks, like photoshop.

Have you heard seen any data on that one, exept the specuatlion on Anandtech?
Any idea if the upcoming products (CS3 for example) might find a way to utilize the FB-Dims more efficiently, or is the problems so prevalent, that it cant be overcome with anything?

Because that might be the deathblow to the Pizza-Mac.

Apple definately wouldn want a cheaper/weaker product to equal or crush its workstations in any area. Let alone on one that is considered it is pride,DTP.

    Anyone?

OK, so apparently you don't have experience with automatics...

But yet you have an opinion on how superior your choice of manuals is.
I had the same thought. Then again, I wasn't sure if he was being sarcastic.

One more thing... they'll change the name from iMac to Mac, bringing a perfect symmetry to their product line-up:

    Mac
    Mac Pro

    MacBook
    MacBook Pro

It brings more symetry (but then you still need the MacBook Mini), but it would eliminate the "i", which appears to be an important trademark for Apple, as it is included in the name of many products.

Computer lines (outside of Apple) overlap ALL THE TIME. It seems like all of you are afraid of the iMac outselling the Mac Pro. The smart thing to do is, yes, to make the iMac super-upgradeable but more expensive to do so, something which is probably intuitive anyway. People will then make the choice of an all-in-one or a tower. There is no such thing as a "too powerful" iMac. Apple sets the price, consumers buy.

No, now that I think about it, I dont think i'm worried about iMacs out selling a Mac Pro.
I'm acctually thinking how Apple tends to keep its computers seperated in some way so that the people that want a Mac Pro get a Mac Pro even if they have to resort to payments just to have it; that way people don't think they could settle for an iMac at 2399 and say "well I wanted a Mac Pro, but this should be ok too i guess"

Thats crazy! no way do Computers (outside of Apple) overlap ALL THE TIME.

Recent files now show in the Dock menu of closed and open apps (not sure if this is new), clicking show recents shows them as tiles like as in DP1

    279465

Spotlight has smaller icons and Google and Wikipedia (been mentioned), but now has dictionary meanings again and the pronunciation

    279468

Directory Utility now has an editor which is like OS X Server's Workgroup Manager. presumably as Server will be included now.

    279467
    - can press ctrl+up again to close Mission Control, doesnt work with ctrl-down for Expos app windows though
    - the Sites folder in home is gone (Apache and Web Sharing still there though)

overall things just seem a little quicker, animations are smoother and getting less Dock, SystemUIServer & Finder crashes. still a few crashes and UI bugs around the place.

If you scroll up over the icon of a closed app in the dock you see thumbnails of those recent files. Pretty cool.

I really think the next option is to even take out the Combo drives on all low end Macs and just add a SuperDrive to every model.

Even if you don't burn that many DVDs, it makes more sense to include it instead of having something that's pretty much outdated that's semi-difficult to replace for most users (the mini is the easiest out of all non-Pro and laptop models to replace the optical drive).

I don't like the idea that Apple has dropped options on lower end models, esp the SuperDrive option on the low end mini. There's not that many advantages that make the extra $200 all that inviting.

I don't think 17" is going to happen. I would rather Apple drop the price on the 20" drastically. $699 is way too much. Dell has two 20" widescreen monitors. One for the office crowd. It has a USB hub built-in, can rotate, has DVI, VGA and S-video inputs. It has identical specs to the Apple monitor. This monitor is about $350. You can get it for lower sometimes. I have one of these (an older model actually - and it cost $500 18 months ago).

Dell also has a new 20" widescreen that does not have USB hub, no rotation capability. However, it has a HDMI port with HDCP (High definition content protection). This is a requirement for HD-DVD and Bluray playback. This monitor is only $250. It has the same 1650x1050 resolution like the Apple 23". You can get the Dell 24" 1920x1200 LCD for $600. Paying $999 for Apple 23" is nuts!

I love my PowerMac G4, but Apple's display prices need to come down.

Also, my powermac is 3.5 years old and I would really like to buy a new MacProsumer. Something that is half the size of MacPro. Has one dual core Conroe, space for 2 HDs, space for one optical drive, 2 PCI express slots, firewire 800, 400, USB 2.0, 802.11g/n, bluetooth, optical audio in/out, DVI/HDMI with HDCP. I want all this to cost $1500 or less.

This would give me the flexibility to buy my own monitor and stay in the iMac arena. iMacs would still sell well for people that want all-in-one. Apple can sell this Conroe towers for business as well as people that want to upgrade. This machine is more of a successor to the PowerMac G4 compared to the MacPro. MacPro is overkill for most people for home use.

As a person who owns 2 MK4 VWs and who's 4 closest friends drive MK4 Jettas, I'd never want to be associated with that.

This is how you make a MK4 look nice:

Just have to wait for the snow to go away to mount my r32 sideskirts and get my spacers on the wheels.

imo, it needs deep dish wheels.. (or ronal turbo's)
still it's a nice ride non the less!

The prices in CompUSa will be dropped on Friday for what they may actually have in stock. They have been constraining them for the past couple weeks. All I have is the display core duo and one box stock core solo. Alot of the apple employees who work in the CompUSAs had extra days off this week due to the holiday (much needed) so they may not have been back into CUSA to let the staff know.

    Kevin

I checked around at comp usa, best buy and even the apple store to see if the mini's they had in stock would be reduced in price because of the new ones that came out.

Best buy and Comp USA had no clue that new models were released and would not budge in price. I dont know what the apple store policy is.

Shouldnt comp usa and best buy reduce the price of the core solo minis they have left?

23% drop in desktop sales is surprising to me. Is it just due to people waiting for PowerMacs with Intels? It is not a good sign that higher iMac sales are not making up for it.

This is actually the general trend in the computer market since the rise of
portables against desktop machines. Portables are becoming increasingly
powerful (computational-wise) up to the point that the line between them
    and Desktops is blurred.

For some time, Handbrake didn't use more than two cores - owners of Quad G5s reported CPU usage of exactly 50 percent, then someone changed it and Quad G5s reported 100 percent CPU usage.

What we don't know: Was the code changed to use up to four processors, or as many processors as are available? Developers are usually very unwilling to ship code that they haven't been able to try out, so expect a version using eight cores about two days after the developers have access to an eight core machine.

In the case of Handbrake, encoding to MPEG4 seems already limited by the speed of the DVD drive; you can't encode faster than you can read from the DVD. H.264 is still limited by processor speed. Using eight cores is not too difficult; for example, if you encode 60 minutes of video, just give 7 1/2 minutes to each core.

Applications should be, and most likely are written to take advantage of available resources. A developer should be writing applications to take advantage of 8-cores already, they don't need an 8-core machine to do so.
