I think you'll be fine with the i5, I would go with the 3.1 GHz over the 2.7 GHz though.
And given that you mentioned you're waiting for it to come to Israel...I'm going to guess the person downgrading your posts is someone who doesn't like Israel.

Yes. Just wait, the new redsn0w will probably be here by the weekend. If it is like the last one they did you will just have to run redsn0w again to untether.

Another HDD space junkie! :D I will buy 1 or 2 TB drives for the Mac Pro. However, what if I buy 1 TB drives and they puke before I fill them up?
Seriously, if you can't find a use for 1TB of space in 3 or 4 years, then you probably shouldn't be buying a MacPro.
Most photography apps don't need lots of cores (they just don't use them). The only appeal of a MacPro to a photographer is the expandability - lots of drives, interchangeable graphics cards. If you don't need the expandability, iMacs are much much better value machines.
If you're seriously worried about saving $30 by buying a slower 500GB drive instead of a faster 1TB drive, you're definitely wasting cash spending $3000 on a MacPro.
I am not being a smart @@S, just asking a legitimate question, as that scenario is my only concern. Also, thanks for clarifying that RAID is not for backup. my good friend uses RAID to backup, but he never writes to his drives, only reads. They are for storing tons of movies and games.
Is that right? How did the data get on to the RAID in the first place?
If your friend only has one copy of his files (on the RAID) then he doesn't have a backup. Backup = an alternate copy.
Not writing to that RAID doesn't make it magically safer... Your friend should get a backup if he's smart and he values his data.
Off-site storage is a big deal with photographers and I understand the benefits, but I never would have added 1+1. LOL
Not so funny when a thief breaks into your house and steals your Mac and the backup drive sat on the table next to it. Proper backups aren't just for professionals - they're for anyone who actually cares about keeping their data.
For someone with a $3000 Mac, a couple of hundred $ to buy enough disks to keep offsite copies is nothing.
I am still thinking about my backup plan, but I have plenty of options thanks to the photographer community! As I stated in my last reply, I will clear my mind this weekend and in all likelihood, order a new Mac Pro 8 core soon.
Sounds like you should be looking at an iMac.

Yeah, I clearly copied the "forum post" template, but that's obviously changeable. It was just a proof of concept, but if random visitors can't write to the 'Talk' page, it's all for naught anyways.
I just thought it might be an invitation for a random net visitor to contribute. That's the main issue facing all wiki's - not enough contributors.
at present, that's by choice. we can open it up to all comers. I think that would increase contributions... but would also increase spam. I don't mind doing it, just need to be sure we have enough people around to offset the spam.

man fsck (http://www.hmug.org/man/8/fsck.html)
Everytime you start your Mac, there's a little spinning wheel. That's the fsck being done automatically for you.Wow, I didn't know that. Is that all it's doing, or is it also performing other system functions?

Hi All,
I've unfortunately been issued a work PC, so I'm wondering if there is a way to take advantage of the real estate (not resolution) of my 30" ACD. The only way I think this will work is by doing the following:
1. Connecting the MiniDisplay cable from the Dual-Link DVI adapter into:
http://storeimages.apple.com/1837/as-images.apple.com/is/image/AppleInc/MB571?wid=326&hei=326&fmt=jpeg&qlt=95&op_sharpen=0&resMode=bicub&op_usm=0.5,0.5,0,0&iccEmbed=0&layer=comp
2. Mini DisplayPort Coupler (Female to Female)
http://images2.monoprice.com/productlargeimages/65001.jpg
3.Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter
http://storeimages.apple.com/1837/as-images.apple.com/is/image/AppleInc/MB572_AV1?wid=326&hei=326&fmt=jpeg&qlt=95&op_sharpen=0&resMode=bicub&op_usm=0.5,0.5,0,0&iccEmbed=0&layer=comp
Is this a solution or should I prepare myself for failure? Is there a better way to do this?
Thanks!

Nope. Don't plan on it.
I have one of the new ones on the Wiimote that came with Wii Play. It's a thicker gauge than my DS strap and the specical addition Mario DS strap my friend gave me.
I'm still thinking that 99% of these broken TVs were the results of Wii Sports Boxing and the person getting to close to the screen, or not putting the strap on in the first place.

Your best bet is probably an open-source calendar script (http://sourceforge.net/search/?type_of_search=soft&exact=1&forum_id=0&group_id=0&atid=0&words=php+calendar&Search=Search) - take a look at those and see if anything comes close.
I'd guess you wouldn't find too many broadcasting specific ones given that most folks in broadcasting are for profit and that the public access/community stations are pretty limited in resources.
Thanks for the suggestion! We ended up tweaking an open-source calendar, and the system seems to work well for me. Hopefully the rest of the folks at the station will like it too. If not, you'll hear from me here. :)

Ah, I didn't realize that using the mute switch would give different results than muting with volume control. (It really shouldn't; the fact that apps can ignore the volume being all the way down is ridiculous.)
This also means I can't lock rotation and mute at the same time? Hmmmmm, when do I need to lock rotation.... When I'm lying in bed. When do I want to mute.... Gee, also when I'm lying in bed so I don't wake up my husband!
This is the most nonsensical settings configuration possible, wtf?
Thanks for your help, though.

I think Chico is talking about professional web design rather than doing it for a friend. I would charge at least $350 as well for a professional design like the example he showed. But if it were for a friend I would charge much less, if anything at all.

My son has an iPod which we have been able to connect to our home wireless router to give him internet access.
However, I have a second wireless router that I use for travelling product demonstrations. I don't have internet access on this router, I don't need it all I want to do connect wireless devices to a PC.
Now I have an old HP iPAQ and connecting it to my second router is a no brainer because all that stuff about gateways etc is irrelevant because I am not accessing the Internet. All I need is a WEP password and away it goes.
However, the iPod just doesn't work at all. I get the tick beside my second router after entering the WEP password but cannot ping or anything. In fact if my internet connected router is within range the iPod will ignore my selection and swap to that.
Am I missing something or does the iPod simply not work without the Internet?

thank you, I think I will wait...
As for the fan issue--when I watch a YouTube videos the fans go crazy, it's really the only time I use the Air that I ever hear the fans.
I know I'm not the only one who has this problem, as I've read on this forum about the issue but have not seen any fix for it yet.

Just when i thought i was set on the Macbook Air, i checked out a review about the new Macbook Pro 13" and i realised how many bells and whistles, aswell as improvements, i can get, for possibly cheaper.
I'd be using my new mac for the usual, iTunes, Chrome, Safari, Word Processing, but most importantly, or the decisive fact, Photoshop and Illustrator CS5. Now from checking out mroogle, and Macrumors threads, i came to the conclusion that the MBA would be just about adequate for my needs. But then i realised how much more comfortable, and just for peace of mind, id be with a Macbook Pro. i think i went into buying an 11" ultimate for the wrong purposes.
My two options would be:
Macbook Air 11" Ultimate-
1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM
128GB Flash Storage
which comes to a grand total of 10648HKD/8,965.10 CNY/1,368.99 USD
OR
Macbook Pro base 13"-
2.3GHz Dual-core Intel Core i5
8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM 2x4GB
320GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
SuperDrive 8x (DVDR DL/DVDRW/CD-RW)
which would come to a grand total of 10648HKD/8,965.10 CNY/1,368.99 USD
so for the same price i get double the RAM, some ridiculous amount of better processing power, which if im correct, is necessary for photoshop, aswell as is the RAM. I also get just under 3 times the storage capacity, which also adds to the peace of mind, plus i get a bigger screen size to work with.
Aswell as an SD card, thunderbolt, and disc drive.
What im losing is the SSD and thinness of the macbook air. The thinness isnt all that important, because i find the MBP to still be rather portable, and the SSD, whilst it is lightning fast and everything, it doesnt quite compensate for the processor difference.
i think im pretty much set on the MBP, and i know that i should buy aftermarket RAM, its just i dont know where to buy the screwdrivers, so if anybody could give me heads up to either a link for the screw drivers, and possibly RAM? that would be great!
Also, any recommended sleeves/ bags? i dont want to put a case, for i find them ugly, but a sleeve would be nice.
So do you guys think i should go MBP or MBA?
Am i missing anything?
If anybody wants to share their experiences between picking between the MBA or MBP feel free to share. I want to see what others think.
all the best,
AJ--
P.S. im a student, and this is all my money, which ive been saving for the last year.

Hello Everyone!
I recently joined MacRumors! Anyway, I want to ask the opinion of everyone.
Do you think the iPod Classic will get an update? Someone stole my iPod August 2010 and I haven't had the money to get a new one. But since it is my birthday, my family told me they'll buy me a new one.
Am really a music person. Am not so much into apps and stuff. But, most of my friends are telling me to just get an iPod touch since it is sooo much better than the iPod classic.
So, I was wondering if anyone can help me decide if I'll buy an iPod now or wait for September? and, which iPod to buy? Classic or Touch.
Thanks!! ;)

That is correct. I've subscribed to their tethering plan but the personal hotspot item doesnt show up under settings/network. I'm guessing at this point that something about the jailbreak is suppressing this - or perhaps the mywi install?
I'd call up AT&T.
They might need to reset your accounts tethering access.

Can it play .ogg files? Probably not. Still don't want it, then. And I hate that you have to use iTunes to sync an iPod. I prefer filesystem based solutions like on the iAudio.

Not everyone wants to have to click through an obscure link just to see what the OP was talking about.
So instead, you download the image and re-post without link attribution? And rather than even taking the time to even *look* at the link itself - which would have taken 0.5 seconds - you simply mindlessly duplicated it and pretended you had a new idea?

You'd be in for shock if you visited the App store. Especially when it comes to the iPad.
The only shock that would be of interest is one that provides tactile feedback. Moving characters around with virtual joystick = no joy. My iPads are good for a lot of things, gaming is just hohum, more like a sub species.;)
